Insulating concrete forms (ICF) are plastic reinforced foam frames which remain in place and act as both insulation and support for the concrete walls and floors of a building. Rebar is added before the concrete is poured, giving the resulting walls flexural strength.
Insulating concrete forms provide an extremely high level of comfort, durability, strength and protection. In addition, its long term cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness and the health benefits make it one of the fastest growing building trends in both residential and industrial construction.
Advantages of ICF Foundations:
- ICFs create warm, dry basements.
- Basements are easily finished for more usable living space.
- ICFs help eliminate more mold and moisture than other construction options.
- Foundation walls built with ICFs are easier and faster to construct than either concrete masonry units (CMU) or cast-in-place (CIP) concrete foundations (depending on total area and house plan).
Advantages of ICF Framing:
- Comfort — Building with ICF provides more uniform temperatures throughout the day and night. Noise levels are lowered and outdoor noise is limited.
- Durability and Strength — Concrete has been used in construction sites wherever strength and durability are prime concerns. It outlasts wood, brick or stone with minimal upkeep. ICF are less prone to cracking or erosion and they absorb minimal amounts of water so they will not warp or shift in damp climates.
- Safety — Concrete construction lowers danger and damage from both fire and storms. Many insurance companies may offer premium reductions for homes made with ICF construction.
- Money-Saving — Concrete is a natural insulator, so homes with concrete construction cost 50% to 70% less to heat in winter and cool in summer. And homes with concrete construction tend to have a higher resale value than homes constructed with traditional building materials.
- Eco-Friendly and Earth Friendly — Because concrete is such a powerful insulator, homes built with concrete walls or floors use significantly less fossil fuel for heating and cooling. Additionally, concrete construction produces far less waste than traditional construction. ICF waste is also 100% recyclable and lightweight, which minimizes the fossil fuels required for shipping.
- Allergen and Toxin Reduction — Concrete produces the lowest levels of dust or allergens of all home construction materials. Concrete construction lowers the toxic levels within homes which are frequently ten times those found outdoors. It reduces moisture levels to lower mold and mildew growth.
- Simple, Fast Construction and Low Maintenance — Concrete forms are pre-fitted and made before they ever reach the building site, so installation is faster than in wood and frame construction which typically requires up to three individual contractors. And compared to wood or stone construction, upkeep is minimal in terms of both time and cost.
Did You know?
With ICF, you'll be able to design your concrete home with all the features possible with other construction methods. There are no limitations on size or design.
Building with ICF may cost more up front but will quickly pay for itself in long-term maintenance and energy savings. And homes with ICF construction tend to have higher resale values.
Build Green
We only use Reward ICFs, so building either your foundation or your house with us offers these ecological advantages:
- The patented Reward ICFs design reduces the amount of building waste created. Building waste is 100% recyclable and lightweight, which minimizes the fossil fuels required for shipping.
- Reward Wall Systems generates no CFCs or HCFCs during manufacturing. ICFs contain no formaldehyde, unlike treated wood.
- Heating and cooling requires less energy, burning less fossil fuels.
